University, companies go for the green

Not all the green work in Alamance County is in construction. Elon University has a goal of reducing its energy use by 6 percent for 2007-08 compared to the previous year and becoming carbon-neutral in the next 30 years, which involves reducing and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions.

Bio buses made their debut in 2006. They run on plant-based biofuel and diesel as they give students rides around and near campus.

The Zipcars have been available to students and others on campus since October. The cars are Toyota Prius models, a hybrid that includes an electric motor.

The Zipcars allow students to rely on walking or biking to get around campus while still having an option for longer trips. Students get access to the cars for a $35 annual fee, and pay an additional fee of $7 an hour or $55 a day to use the cars.
