Renewable alternative energy sources are those energy sources that are derived by means other than the conventional fossil-fuel sources energy including oil, natural gas and coal. These alternative energy sources include the following:
- Solar Energy – Energy that is present in sunlight.
- Wind Energy – Kinetic energy present in wind currents.
- Biofuels – Liquid fuels that are derive from biological material such as corn or algea.
- Wave and Tidal Energy that is present in oceanic waves.
- Hydroelectric – Energy contained in running water such as rivers.
- Nuclear – Energy harnessed from the atom.
Fossil fuels are non-renewable and finite resources. Someday oil, natural gas, and coal will become scarce. Their is concern that is backed by overwhelming evidence that crude oil has been on a production plateau for 3½ years and some believe it is because production is not able to keep pace with demand. If oil production fails to rise up to meet demand, regardless of whether the cause is geological or geo-political, something will have to fill the gap. And that something will have to be renewable, in lieu of any other yet-be-discovered hydrocarbon.
Legendary Texas oil man T. Boone Pickens is currently whipping up a tornado of publicity as he sells his Pickens’ Plan to investors and the general public. He aims to build 697 wind turbines in the Texas panhandle and then clear up a north-ward corridor to the Canadian border with thousands more. Florida has just cleared the way to build the first commercial solar power plant in the state. According to the University of Virginia’s UVaToday website, “In the world of alternative fuels, there may be nothing greener than pond scum.” So, while there are encouraging things happening, we have only just begun to scratch the surface of the potential of renewable energy sources.
There is little doubt that we are currently in an energy shock and that, combined with concerns about global warming, our consumption habits will have to experience a paradigm shift from fossil fuels to clean and renewable sources of energy in the near future. This site was created to assist people who are interested in the growing alternative energy industry and to provide alternative and renewable energy news and commentary and the general public.
We are a news blog, which means that the alternative energy news we cover is usually accompanied with comment from both the author of an article or by those who comment on it. We have pages for each of the above listed alternative energy sources and are growing information resouces that you’ll be able to refer to frequently. Our other features include (or will include) interviews with movers and shakers in the alternative energy game, op-eds, polls, investment info, links, and event calendars.
We hope that you enjoy your visit to AlternaWatt.info.
